August feels warm and humid, with daytime highs around 25°C and mild nights. Rain is rare, but cloud can linger, so don't expect wall-to-wall sunshine. The sea breeze makes the waterfront and beach days more comfortable than long walks uphill.

You'll have good conditions for Las Teresitas or a shaded stroll through Parque García Sanabria. Save the steep climb to Castillo de San Juan for a cooler part of the day, and take breaks if the sticky air feels tiring. Families with young children may find beach time easier than a full day of sightseeing.

Fiestas and holidays

The pilgrimage to Candelaria takes place on August 14 and 15, drawing people to the town's basilica to honour the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands. It's a lively local tradition, but expect busy roads and public transport around Candelaria. August 15 is also a public holiday in Spain, so some shops and services may close.

Santa Cruz itself is quieter during the summer holiday period, as many residents leave town. Still, popular beaches and routes to Candelaria can fill up, especially around the holiday.

Crowds and costs

August is high season across the islands, so flights and places to stay often cost more than in the quieter months from autumn to spring. Santa Cruz can feel less crowded than the resort areas, but don't count on low-season prices.
