Mild days, cool evenings

December is one of the best months to visit San Antonio, and the weather is a big reason why. Days are mild, with highs around 19°C, but the air turns chilly after sunset, with lows near 7°C. Rain is about the same as in November, though the shorter days leave less time for sightseeing. November and the months through April are also good choices if December doesn't suit your plans.

The mild afternoons suit the Alamo, the historic missions and a walk along the River Walk. When rain arrives, skip the long outdoor plans and head to the Witte Museum for an indoor change of pace.

Holiday lights and crowds

The River Walk's holiday lights brighten the season, and you can enjoy them from the riverside paths or from a tour boat. San Antonio's Christmas celebrations also include Las Posadas, a procession along the River Walk that retells the story of Mary and Joseph.

Families can enjoy the lights without summer's sticky heat, though the paths get busy near Christmas and New Year. If you can, come in early December, when it's generally calmer. Hotel prices tend to climb around the holidays, while the rest of the month often costs less than spring break or peak summer.

Make the River Walk easier

Take the stairs down to the River Walk near the Alamo, then follow the signed path to the lit stretch. It's a different route from the busy streets above, but the narrow walkway can feel crowded on holiday evenings, so a daytime visit is more relaxed.

For couples, a boat ride beneath the lights makes a cosy evening. Just check whether tours are running in poor weather first. If you'd rather skip the crowds, visit the missions by day and save the River Walk for an early evening stroll.
