September: wet afternoons

September feels mild rather than hot, with comfortable mornings and cooler evenings. But rain comes often: expect damp streets, heavy clouds and limited sunshine. August is slightly wetter, while October is much drier.

You can still enjoy Puebla's historic centre, including the Cathedral and Amparo Museum. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible, since showers can interrupt a long walk or a trip to nearby Cholula. Avoid relying on clear views of the volcanoes, which clouds may hide.

Independence celebrations

On September 15, crowds gather around the Zócalo for the Grito, the traditional cry marking Mexico's independence. The celebration continues on September 16, Mexico's Independence Day, with public events and a parade.

If you hate crowds, visit the Zócalo earlier in the day and choose a quieter dinner spot away from the main square that night. The holiday brings a lively mood, but central streets can be busy.

Quieter, with a seasonal dish

Outside the Independence celebrations, September is generally less crowded than Puebla's dry high season, which runs from November to April. You may find the city calmer and accommodation less costly than in those popular months, though holiday demand can lift prices around the Zócalo.

Travelling with kids? Keep a museum or café stop in reserve for rainy spells. For a very Puebla-specific tip, look for chile en nogada, a seasonal poblano pepper filled with meat and fruit, topped with walnut sauce. It's commonly served in late summer and early autumn, and makes a fitting meal after exploring the centre.
