April: rain shapes the day

April feels hot, sticky and often grey in Palembang. Highs reach 30°C, and rain falls on 25 days, so showers can interrupt a walk or boat trip. It's also very cloudy, with little sunshine. Keep sightseeing flexible: visit the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum or Benteng Kuto Besak between showers, then enjoy a bowl of pempek indoors.

The Musi River still makes a good outing, but don't count on clear views from the water. Heavy rain can make riverside plans damp and uncomfortable. Save longer outdoor visits for breaks in the clouds, and avoid relying on a tight schedule.

Events and local plans

Palembang doesn't have a major fixed festival that reliably takes place every April. Idulfitri may fall in April in some years, as its date follows the lunar calendar. If it does, expect local travel and family visits to affect opening hours and crowds.

If you hate crowds, April can suit you outside the Idulfitri period. It's generally quieter than the drier, more popular months, and accommodation prices may be softer than in August. Don't expect a guaranteed bargain around a public holiday, though.

Make the most of wet days

Travelling with kids? Keep a covered stop in reserve, such as Palembang Indah Mall, when rain interrupts an outing. For a practical local plan, visit Benteng Kuto Besak, then cross nearby Ampera Bridge by car or ride-hailing rather than lingering on the exposed riverfront in a downpour. You'll still get a feel for the Musi without making the weather the whole day. Pack a small umbrella for short walks between the museum, food spots and riverside sights.
