March in Omdurman is dry, sunny and already very hot. Afternoons reach 37°C, while evenings cool to around 19°C. With almost no cloud or rain, there's little shade from the weather; the comfort rating is poor. February is cooler, and April gets hotter still.

The Mahdi's Tomb and Khalifa House are easier to enjoy in the cooler part of the day. Save a long wander through Souq Omdurman for then, too. The market's narrow lanes offer some shade, but a long afternoon visit can feel draining. A Nile-side outing is best kept short when the sun is high.

March events and crowds

There's no fixed, major March festival in Omdurman. Ramadan follows the lunar calendar, so it may fall in March in some years. If it does, daytime routines can change, and many people gather to break the fast after sunset.

If you hate crowds, the market is generally less busy than during the cooler December and January visitor season. March's heat can mean quieter sightseeing, though local demand and prices vary. Don't count on a bargain: conditions in Sudan can affect travel and costs more than the month does.

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor visits short and make the cooler hours count. March's long, bright days are better for a focused visit than a packed sightseeing schedule. Skip strenuous walks in the midday heat, especially around open areas with little shade.

For a distinctly local evening, look for the Friday Sufi gathering at Hamed al-Nil cemetery, where worshippers perform a dhikr, or remembrance ritual. It's a religious gathering, not a tourist show, so watch quietly and follow local guidance. If Ramadan is underway, ask locally about timing and access before heading out.
