Visiting Odesa in July
July by the sea
July is hot, sunny and often sticky by afternoon. You'll get long days for a swim at Lanzheron or Arcadia, then a cooler walk along Prymorsky Boulevard. Short showers can interrupt a beach day, but rain usually falls on only a handful of days.
The heat makes long walks around the city centre tiring at midday. Save the Potemkin Stairs and the courtyards of Moldavanka for later in the day, and don't count on a cool evening: nights stay warm. July is still one of Odesa's best months overall, but August is hotter and drier.
Events and crowds
Ukraine's Navy Day falls on the first Sunday of July, and Odesa's naval ties make it a fitting time to visit. Public celebrations can be limited or changed, so don't build your trip around a particular event. The Odesa International Film Festival has often taken place in summer, but its timing can vary.
July is peak beach season. Arcadia's clubs and waterfront fill up, and accommodation usually costs more than in quieter months such as May or September. If you hate crowds, choose Lanzheron for a swim and explore the centre on a weekday.
Make the most of it
Travelling with kids? Keep the busiest beach hours short, then take a gentle ride on the Odesa funicular between the port area and Prymorsky Boulevard. It saves you the steep climb near the Potemkin Stairs, while still giving you a close look at the city's waterfront.
For a meal after the beach, try local Black Sea fish at a restaurant near Lanzheron rather than heading straight to Arcadia's busiest strip. July brings warm sea air and late sunsets, but the popular beach areas can stay noisy into the evening.
