Best Time to Visit Noumea
New Caledonia · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
Weather-wise, July to October is the best time to visit Noumea. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 22°C and 27°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over January and March to April; March is the wettest month with about 155 mm (6.1 in) of rain.
When to go to Noumea: a seasonal guide
Two seasons, and a long hot one
Noumea sits in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons run opposite to Europe's. The warm, wet season runs from about December to April. Days are sticky, with highs of 26 to 27°C, and the nights barely cool down. Rain falls on more than half the days in January and March, often in short, heavy bursts. This is also cyclone season in the South Pacific, so keep an eye on forecasts if you're travelling then.
From June to October it's the cool, dry season. Mornings are fresh, afternoons are pleasant, and you'll want a light jumper for evenings by the water at Anse Vata. It's the easiest time to be outdoors.
Which month for which trip
For beaches and boat trips, aim for September to November. The sun shines nearly seven hours a day or more, and rain is at its lowest. Boats to Île aux Canards and Îlot Maître, the little islands just off the coast, are easier to enjoy on calm, bright days. November is the warmest of the excellent months, and it's a good pick if 22°C feels too cool for swimming.
Prefer walking and sightseeing? June to August is comfortable. The Parc Forestier and the hills around Mont-Dore are much nicer without the heat. The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, which celebrates Kanak culture, is a pleasure to wander in mild weather. The sea is cooler, so it's better for snorkelling in a wetsuit than for long swims.
If you're on a tight budget or don't mind humidity, February to April can work. Expect grey spells and the odd lost afternoon.
Crowds, school holidays and events
Noumea is a quiet place most of the year. The busiest times are the Australian and New Zealand school holidays, especially in July and around December and January, when visitors from those countries fill the beachfront hotels. French school breaks also bring families in the cooler months.
Events are worth planning around. The Foire de Bourail, a country fair with rodeo and cattle shows, takes place in August in Bourail, a few hours' drive up the west coast. September 24 is Citizenship Day, a local public holiday. Bastille Day on July 14 is also marked here, with fireworks and a parade, reflecting the French ties.
For most people, September and October are the sweet spot. You get dry weather, long sunny days and fewer crowds than July.
