When to visit New Caledonia
Noumea is the only city here, but the islands differ
Our data covers Noumea, on the main island, Grande Terre. It's a good guide for the south and the lagoon, but not the whole territory. The Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Ouvéa, Maré) and the Isle of Pines run a little quieter and a little drier. The north and east of Grande Terre get more rain, because the mountains catch the trade winds.
The seasons: cool and dry, or hot and wet
The best window is July to October. Days are warm and sunny, evenings are mild, and the sea is calm enough for snorkelling at Anse Vata and Île aux Canards. July and August can feel cool at night, so you may want a light jacket for dinner in the Baie des Citrons. It's also whale season. Humpbacks visit the southern lagoon from about July to September, and boat trips leave from near Noumea.
February is the hottest month at 27°C. It's sticky, and the afternoons can be heavy. March is the wettest, with 155 mm of rain. Cyclones can hit from roughly November to April, so check forecasts and buy travel insurance that covers storms. Don't write off these months, though. Showers often pass quickly, and the lagoon is warm. You'll find fewer people on the Isle of Pines beaches.
Holidays, crowds and high season
Most visitors come in the dry season. Prices and crowds rise a little in the French school holidays, and July and August are the busiest for families. Local school holidays also fill up inter-island flights and ferries, so seats go fast.
Public holidays follow the French calendar, with a local twist. Bastille Day on 14 July brings fireworks and parties. New Caledonia Citizenship Day, on 24 September, is a local holiday. Shops and some restaurants close on these days, and Sundays are quiet in Noumea too.
If you want the best mix of weather and space, try September or October. The sea is clear, the heat hasn't built yet, and the school-holiday rush is over.
