When to go to Brisbane: a seasonal guide
Winter, June to August: dry and easy
Brisbane's winter is mild and sunny. Days sit around 20 to 22°C, and nights are cool enough for a jumper. August is the driest month on the table, with only five rainy days. The sky is usually clear and the air feels less sticky.
This is the best time for walking the Kangaroo Point cliffs, riding the CityCat ferry along the river, or wandering the South Bank parklands. The water is too cool for most people at Streets Beach, but you'll have plenty of space. Travelling with kids? Late June to mid July is the Queensland school holiday, so family spots like Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary get busier. August is the quieter pick.
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
September is a real contender. It's dry, sunny and warming up, and it has the most sunshine on the table at about eight hours a day. In October and November the heat builds but the humidity stays moderate. Showers turn up more often, usually as short afternoon storms. Brisbane Festival fills the riverside with music and fireworks in September, which makes that month especially good for a city break.
April and May are just as good. The summer stickiness fades, the rain eases, and evenings are pleasant for dinner on a Howard Smith Wharves terrace. If you want a day trip to Moreton Island or the Glass House Mountains, these months are a great fit.
Summer, December to March: hot, wet and sticky
Be honest with yourself about summer. Days reach 27 to 29°C, nights stay warm, and humidity sits above 70%. February is the wettest month, and March has the most rainy days at 17. Storms often roll in late in the afternoon, so plan outdoor sights for the morning.
It's also the busiest time for locals. Christmas and January school holidays mean full beaches and higher demand on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, both a short trip away. Brisbane itself stays fairly relaxed. If you love swimming and don't mind the damp, you'll enjoy it. If heat wears you down, skip it.
The summer rating is lower, but you can still have a great trip. Just keep a flexible plan and an indoor backup like the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) on South Bank.
