December: wet and cloudy

December feels warm, damp and often grey in Nha Trang. Highs reach 26°C, but rain falls on 18 days, with about 2.5 hours of sun a day. Showers can interrupt beach time, and rough seas may disrupt boat trips to Hon Mun. Keep island outings flexible; city sights are a better bet when the weather turns.

You can still stroll along Tran Phu's seafront between showers or visit the Po Nagar Cham Towers. For a rainy spell, Long Son Pagoda offers a quieter change of pace.

Christmas by the coast

Christmas brings decorations and services at Nha Trang Cathedral, also called Christ the King Cathedral. It's a local religious holiday, though Christmas Day isn't a public holiday in Vietnam. You'll also find New Year's Eve celebrations around the city, especially near the seafront.

Couples who enjoy a slower city break may prefer the cafés and seafood restaurants to a full day on the water.

Quieter, with a holiday bump

December is generally less suited to a beach holiday than the drier months from February to April. Rainy conditions can mean fewer beachgoers and softer demand than in the peak dry season, though Christmas and New Year can bring a short-lived rise in visitors and prices. It's not the month for guaranteed sunny swims.

A useful local plan: if the sea looks choppy, skip the Hon Mun boat trip and try bun cha ca, Nha Trang's fish-cake noodle soup, at a city restaurant instead. You'll still get a taste of the coast without relying on clear skies.
