Visiting Nairobi in August
August weather
August is one of Nairobi's most comfortable months for getting around. Afternoons are mild, while mornings and evenings feel cool, especially in the leafy suburbs. Rain is limited, though a few showers can still interrupt a walk.
With plenty of cloud and some daily sunshine, you can mix outdoor stops with indoor ones. Nairobi National Park works well for a game drive, and the Karen Blixen Museum is a good quieter stop if the weather turns. Don't expect a guaranteed blue-sky day, or warm evenings on an outdoor terrace.
What to do
If you're visiting Nairobi National Park, ask your driver to take the Langata Road entrance. The drier season can make wildlife easier to spot in the shorter grass, though sightings are never certain. For a break nearby, the Giraffe Centre is another well-known stop in Karen.
Travelling with kids? Pair the park with the Giraffe Centre, rather than trying to squeeze in a long list of distant sights. Keep an indoor option, such as the Nairobi National Museum, for a cloudy or rainy spell.
Crowds and costs
August isn't known for a major fixed national holiday in Kenya. It's a popular time for safari trips to the Maasai Mara, so Nairobi can feel busy with travellers passing through. Hotels and safari transfers may cost more than in quieter months, though prices vary by provider.
If you hate crowds, spend more time in neighbourhoods like Karen and less around central transport hubs at peak times. Nairobi's mild weather also makes a city day pleasant, but allow extra time if you're crossing town by car.
