Visiting Moscow in September
September weather
September feels like a proper change from summer. Days reach about 16°C, but evenings can dip to 7°C. Rain falls on 11 days, and skies are often cloudy, so don't count on a full day of sunshine.
It's still a good month for walking around Red Square, the Kremlin grounds and the lanes of Kitay-Gorod. Gorky Park is lovely for a stroll, too, though wet paths can make a long park day less appealing. Save outdoor plans for clearer spells, and keep museums like the Tretyakov Gallery in mind for rainy afternoons.
Events and city life
Moscow City Day is usually celebrated in early September, with concerts and events around the city. The programme changes each year, but central streets and squares can get busy during the festivities.
If you hate crowds, visit Red Square on a weekday and leave the City Day celebrations for another time. The summer rush has eased, so September often feels calmer than July and August. Prices can also be less steep than in peak summer, though major events may make central hotels harder to find.
Getting around
September is a comfortable time to explore on foot, but don't plan every day around outdoor sights. October is much colder, while August is warmer and wetter, so September offers a useful middle ground.
Travelling with kids? Gorky Park has room to run around, and the Moscow Metro makes it easy to reach if the weather turns. For a practical route, take the metro to Park Kultury and walk along the river to the park; you'll avoid relying on a long exposed walk from the centre. Keep an indoor stop nearby, such as the New Tretyakov Gallery, for a rainy spell.
