Christmas and crowds

If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest Christmas and New Year stretch. December is high season, so resorts and popular beaches are livelier, and room rates often rise compared with quieter months. January and February are also popular, but December's holiday rush adds extra pressure.

Travelling with kids? Doctor's Cave Beach is an easy choice for a swim and a break from sightseeing. Its calm, clear water is a better bet than trying to fit a long inland outing into a day with passing showers.

For a practical local tip, allow extra time between Sangster International Airport and the Hip Strip, the hotel and restaurant area along Gloucester Avenue. Holiday traffic can slow that short trip, especially around Christmas. If rain moves in, head to the shops and cafés on the Hip Strip, then return to the beach when skies clear.
