Mandalay Weather in November

November: dry, but hot

November is much drier than October, with only about three rainy days. The catch is the heat. Afternoons still reach 34°C, so Mandalay Palace or a walk around the moat can feel tiring by midday. Mornings are your best window for sightseeing, and the cooler evenings are lovely for a stroll along the Irrawaddy River.

Sunshine is plentiful, which makes the climb up Mandalay Hill worth it, but the steps and open viewpoints are hard going in the midday heat. Save the climb for later in the day. The dry weather also suits a boat trip to Mingun. Still, if long walks are your priority, December and January are the better months, since they're cooler and rate higher overall. November gets a Fair 6.2/10 for a reason.

Tazaungdaing lights

The full-moon festival of Tazaungdaing usually falls in November, though its dates follow the lunar calendar. Across Myanmar it's marked with lights and offerings, and in Mandalay you may see pagodas and streets decorated for the occasion. Don't expect the big balloon events in Taunggyi, though. That festival takes place in Shan State.

If you're planning outdoor sightseeing with the family, mornings will be far more comfortable than the long, sunny afternoons.

Crowds and local tips

November marks the start of Mandalay's drier visitor season. It's busier than the rainy months, but December and January draw the biggest crowds. Prices often start to climb with demand, so November is usually a little less pressured than those peak months.

For Mahamuni Pagoda, go early, before the heat builds and the shrine fills up. Men traditionally apply gold leaf to the Buddha image, but women aren't allowed into the inner area where that happens. You can still see the image from outside the restricted space.
