Visiting Maldives in August
August weather
August feels warm, damp and often cloudy. In Kaafu Atoll, both the average high and low are 28°C, but rain falls on many days and sunshine is limited. You may get a bright spell between showers, not a full day of clear skies.
Snorkelling and diving can still work when the sea is calm, and surfers often welcome the southwest monsoon swells. But choppy water can make boat trips less comfortable, and showers may interrupt beach time. If you hate crowds, August's quieter resorts may suit you better than the busy dry season.
Events and island life
There's no major national festival fixed to August. Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar, so their dates shift from year to year. If Eid falls during your stay, you may see local celebrations, though some shops and services can close.
Rainy spells are a good excuse to linger over mas huni, a Maldivian breakfast of tuna, coconut and flatbread, or enjoy a long lunch at your resort. Don't expect every island to have the same choice of restaurants: local inhabited islands and resort islands have very different setups.
Crowds and practical tips
August is low season, so resorts are usually quieter and offers can be better than in January to March, the driest months. The trade-off is less reliable weather and rougher crossings. September is also rainy, so waiting a month won't guarantee clear skies.
Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible plan for boat outings, especially if the forecast turns squally. From Velana International Airport, many Kaafu resorts use speedboats rather than seaplanes. Ask your resort which transfer it runs and what happens if rough seas delay the ride.
