September feels mild in Luxembourg City, with pleasant afternoons and cooler evenings. It's often a good month for walking the Chemin de la Corniche or exploring the old town on foot. Rain falls on about 10 days, so wet cobbles can make steep paths down to Grund slippery.

You'll get less daylight than in summer, and cloud can soften the views from the Bock Casemates. Keep outdoor plans flexible rather than saving every sight for one long day. August is warmer and wetter; October turns cooler and wetter still.

What to do

The Schueberfouer, Luxembourg City's big funfair, usually runs from late August into early September. If it's on during your visit, expect rides, food stalls and extra crowds around Glacis. Dates vary, so don't count on catching it later in the month.

If you hate crowds, visit the old town on a weekday and head to the Corniche before the fair opens. September is usually calmer than August once the fair ends, though it's still a popular month. Prices can ease after the summer peak, but they may stay higher during the fair.

Getting around

Travelling with kids? A rainy afternoon at the National Museum of History and Art is an easy swap for a long outdoor walk.

Luxembourg's buses, trams and trains are free in second class, which makes getting around simple without a car. Use the tram to reach Glacis for the Schueberfouer, or to connect with the city centre. The ride won't save you from every hill: allow extra time for the steep walk between the upper city and Grund.
