Best Time to Visit Luxembourg

One small country, one main city

Luxembourg is tiny, so the weather barely changes from place to place. Our site covers Luxembourg City, and the timing advice works for the whole country. The Ardennes hills in the north, around Vianden and Clervaux, can feel a bit cooler and damper. The Moselle wine villages in the east, like Remich and Grevenmacher, are usually the mildest.

Summer to early autumn

July and September are the best months. July is the hottest, at 25°C. That's warm without being punishing, so it suits walking the Chemin de la Corniche, the cliff-top path above the Grund district. Evenings stay light and long. You can sit outside in the Grund or on Place d'Armes well after dinner.

September is calmer. The days are still pleasant, the grape harvest starts along the Moselle, and wine festivals pop up in the villages. If you hike the Mullerthal Trail, a forest path through rocky gorges, September is a lovely time for it.

Winter, and holidays that matter

December is the wettest month, at 82 mm. It's grey and damp, but it's also when Winterlights comes to Luxembourg City. Christmas markets fill Place d'Armes and Place Guillaume II, and the smell of mulled wine (glühwein) hangs over the squares. Pack an umbrella and plan some museum time at the Mudam or the Casemates du Bock, the old tunnels under the city.

Two dates are worth knowing. National Day is on 23 June, with fireworks and a torchlit evening in the capital. Many shops and offices close on public holidays, so check opening hours for sights outside the city.

High and low season

High season runs from about June to August. Hotels in the city can be pricier in summer, though business travel drives much of the demand, so midweek can be busy in spring and autumn too. Winter weekends are often cheaper, apart from the Christmas market period. If you want good weather and fewer people, aim for September.
