Warm, changeable summer days

February feels warm and humid, with mild nights. Showers come and go, and clouds can dull the sunshine, so don't count on a full day of blue skies. Still, the weather is comfortable for wandering Kingston's open-air convict ruins or swimming and snorkelling at Emily Bay.

Rain falls on several days, but it usually doesn't rule out a visit. Keep indoor time for the Norfolk Island Museum, then return to the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area when the weather clears. Long hikes may feel sticky in the humidity, and sea conditions can make snorkelling less appealing.

February isn't known for a major annual festival in Kingston. Valentine's Day may bring a reason for a special meal, but Norfolk Island's big Bounty Day celebrations come later in the year.

If you hate crowds, February can suit you better than the January holiday rush. It's still summer, a popular time to visit, so don't expect Kingston to feel empty. Prices can remain higher than in quieter winter months, though they may ease after January as Australian school holidays end.

Travelling with kids? Emily Bay's sheltered water is often a gentler choice than exposed coast, but check conditions before swimming. The beach sits right beside the historic precinct, so you can pair a swim with a stroll past the old gaol and stone ruins.

For a local tip, walk from Kingston toward Point Hunter along the shoreline, then pause at the pier for views back across Emily Bay. If a shower rolls in, duck into the museum rather than waiting it out in the open.
