When to visit Norfolk Island

One island, one climate

Norfolk Island is small, so you won't find big regional differences. Kingston, the old convict-era settlement on the south coast, is where most visitors base themselves, and our data covers it. The weather there is mild all year. You get no real extremes, just a gentler winter and a warm, humid summer.

The seasons

Summer runs from December to February. February is the hottest month at 23°C, which is warm enough for swimming at Emily Bay but rarely scorching. Afternoons can feel sticky, and the sea breeze helps.

Winter is cooler and wetter. June is the wettest month, with about 90 mm of rain. Expect grey spells, wind and showers that pass through quickly. It's still fine for walking in Norfolk Island National Park, but the Mount Pitt and Mount Bates tracks can be muddy.

Our best-time picture is wide: May, and then August through to February. That leaves out only March, April, June and July. Spring (September to November) is a lovely middle ground, with fresh green hillsides and fewer showers than midwinter.

Events and crowds

Bounty Day on 8 June is the island's big cultural day. Descendants of the Pitcairn Islanders, who settled here in 1856, re-enact their arrival in Kingston, with costumes and a community picnic. It falls in our wettest month, so bring a raincoat. It's worth it if you care about the island's story.

Thanksgiving, in late November, is another local tradition, a legacy of the American whalers. It's a quiet, community-minded occasion, not a tourist show.

High and low season

The island is busiest in the Australian school holidays, especially December and January, and around Easter. Flights from the mainland are limited and the island is small, so accommodation and rental cars fill up fast in those weeks.

If you like peace, aim for September, October or November. You'll get mild days, quieter roads and an easier time finding a table at the local restaurants. Winter is the lowest season, which suits you if you'd rather have empty tracks and don't mind a wet day or two.
