Visiting Khartoum in October
October heat
October in Khartoum is still seriously hot. Afternoons reach 39°C, and even nights stay warm, around 25°C. The air is fairly dry, with little rain, but the heat can make long walks tiring. The city's open riverside stretches are best enjoyed briefly, not as a full afternoon outing.
The National Museum of Sudan and the covered displays at the Khalifa House Museum make more manageable stops than wandering around Omdurman in the midday sun. Save outdoor sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day. November is a little cooler and drier, while December and January are the most comfortable months overall.
A quieter month
October 21 marks the anniversary of Sudan's 1964 October Revolution. Commemorations may take place, but don't count on a particular public event; plans can vary.
If you hate crowds, October is generally quieter than Khartoum's more comfortable winter months. Visitor demand, and often hotel prices, may be lower than in December and January, though local conditions can affect both. There's no major holiday rush to expect, but don't assume every shop or service will keep normal hours around commemorations.
Make the heat work
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor sightseeing short, and choose an indoor stop between outings. A visit to the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile can work in the cooler part of the day, but the exposed riverbanks offer little shade.
For a practical local stop, head to Souq Omdurman for a meal of ful medames, a slow-cooked fava bean dish. The market is a better place to browse under cover than to cross open streets in the afternoon heat. Set your outing around a nearby taxi ride rather than a long walk; distances between central Khartoum and Omdurman can make an exposed stroll feel much longer.
