Visiting Kathmandu in August
August: warm and soaked
August feels warm, sticky and cloudy in Kathmandu. Rain falls on most days, often turning lanes around Thamel and Patan into muddy, slippery routes. The air can feel heavy, and views of the surrounding hills are often hidden by cloud.
July is wetter, but August still brings 275 mm of rain. September is drier, so it's a better choice if you want clearer days. You can still visit indoor sights, browse the shops in Thamel or take a slow look around Patan Museum. Keep longer walks flexible; heavy showers can make the steps at Swayambhunath slick.
Festivals and quieter streets
Gai Jatra, Kathmandu's cow festival, can fall in August, though its date follows the lunar calendar. Families parade through the streets to honour relatives who died in the past year. It's a striking local event, but expect busy lanes around the procession.
Outside festival days, August is low season. You'll usually find fewer international visitors and lower hotel rates than in the popular autumn months. Rain is the trade-off, and some mountain views or day trips may disappoint.
Tips for a rainy visit
For families with young children, keep sightseeing close to central Kathmandu so you can duck indoors when showers begin. A long outing can become tiring when pavements are wet and traffic slows.
At Boudhanath Stupa, walk the kora—the traditional circuit around the stupa—at an easy pace, and use the surrounding cafés as a rain break. For a drier visit to the old city, save Kathmandu Durbar Square for a pause in the rain rather than crossing town during a downpour.
