September feels cool and damp rather than sunny, even though rain is scarce. The air is humid, and thick cloud often hangs over Jamestown; you may get only brief spells of sunshine. Temperatures stay near 18°C, so the town's steep streets and historic sights are comfortable to explore on foot.

The cloud can hide views from the high ground, so keep your plans flexible if you're hoping for clear island scenery. A walk around the waterfront or a visit to St James' Church still works well on a grey day. Don't count on a classic sun-and-sea beach visit: September is better for exploring than lounging in full sun.

Events and crowds

September isn't known for a major island-wide festival or public holiday. St Helena's National Day falls in October, so you won't find that celebration this month. Local events can vary, but September is generally a quieter time to see Jamestown's museums and historic buildings.

If you hate crowds, September is a good choice: it sits outside the destination's best months, which run from December to July. Visitor numbers may be lower than in those months, but don't assume travel will be cheap. Saint Helena is remote, and fewer visitors don't necessarily mean lower fares or lots of spare accommodation.

Travelling with kids? Take Jacob's Ladder at a steady pace, and treat it as a serious climb rather than a quick shortcut. The long staircase links Jamestown with the higher ground above town, and cloud can make the upper views less rewarding. If the summit is hidden, enjoy the changing town views on the way instead. A clear spell is worth waiting for before you make the climb.
