Harare's December days feel warm and damp, with frequent showers and plenty of cloud. Rain falls on about 21 days, so a sunny morning can turn into a wet afternoon. It's not the easiest month for long walks through the National Botanic Gardens or day trips on muddy roads.

You can still enjoy the city between showers. Visit the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, or settle in for a meal of sadza and stew. December is warmer and much wetter than November, and January brings even more rain.

Christmas in Harare

Christmas Day and Boxing Day are public holidays, and many people gather with family. Some shops and restaurants may close or keep shorter hours, so don't count on every place being open. The festive period can also make transport and accommodation busier, with prices often higher than in quieter months.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling through Harare around Christmas. The city itself may feel quieter on the holiday, but getting around can be less straightforward.

Making the most of your visit

December is outside Harare's best-dry-weather stretch, which runs from April to September. The cloud and rain can interrupt outdoor sightseeing, but the long daylight gives you room to shift plans when showers pass. Save outdoor stops for a break in the weather, and keep an indoor option in mind.

Travelling with kids? The National Gallery is a useful rainy-day stop, with art to explore indoors. For a practical local tip, check that Mbare Musika is open before making a special trip; holiday hours can change, and its busy outdoor market is less pleasant in heavy rain. If you're going, a taxi is easier than trying to navigate the market's crowded edges by car.
