Events and quieter streets

Outside the fair, October is calmer than the summer peak and the busy Christmas market season. Hotel prices are often easier on the budget than in high summer, but weekends around the DOM can still draw visitors. Compared with September, the weather is cooler and wetter, so you may find fewer people lingering outdoors.

Getting around in the rain

For a practical harbour outing, take ferry 62 from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder. It's part of Hamburg's public transport network, so you can ride without paying for a separate sightseeing cruise. Sit inside if the weather turns; the route still gives you views of the Elbe and the working port. Then warm up with a bowl of Labskaus, a traditional Hamburg dish, near the harbour.
