January feels warm

January is summer in Gqeberha, with warm days and mild nights. It's humid, and cloud can share the sky with sunshine. Rain falls on several days, so beach plans may need a little flexibility.

King's Beach and Hobie Beach suit lazy swims and coastal walks when the weather's clear. The beachfront promenade is a good choice if you'd rather keep moving than sit in the sticky afternoon heat. Long, exposed sightseeing can feel tiring, especially when the clouds break and the sun comes out.

Summer holidays and crowds

New Year's Day is a public holiday, and January falls within South Africa's summer holiday period. Expect more families at the beachfront and popular beaches than in quieter months. Accommodation and travel can cost more than during the low season, though prices vary.
