May: warm and damp

May feels warm and humid in Flying Fish Cove, with little change between day and night. Rain falls on many days, though April is wetter and June is a little drier. Expect cloud and passing showers, not a washout every day.

You can explore the Settlement and swim or snorkel around Flying Fish Cove when the water is calm. Showers can make forest tracks slippery, so skip a long walk if rain has left the ground slick. Cloud also means less reliable sunshine for a full beach day.

Events and quieter days

There's no major island-wide festival that reliably takes place in May. Vesak, a Buddhist holiday marking the Buddha's birth, can fall in May, but its date changes each year. Christmas Island Day is in October, not May.

If you hate crowds, May is a quieter choice than the island's more popular July-to-October period. Accommodation and flights may feel less pressured than in those busier months, but options on the island are limited, so don't assume every trip will be cheaper.

Make the most of the Cove

Travelling with kids? A short visit to the Cove's foreshore is easier to fit around showers than a long trail walk. Keep plans flexible, and use a break in the rain for a swim or a wander through the Settlement.

For snorkelling, check conditions at the Flying Fish Cove beach before getting in. The Cove is the island's main settlement and its familiar entry point to the sea, but rough water can make swimming unsafe. Ask locally about current conditions rather than relying on the look of the surface alone.
