Port Moresby: dry season is the sweet spot

Port Moresby sits on the south coast, in one of the drier parts of the country. The best months are July to September. Days are warm, skies are mostly clear, and you won't spend your afternoons dodging downpours.

The wet season peaks around March, which is the wettest month at 289 mm. December is the hottest at 30°C, and it feels sticky. If you're heading to the Kokoda Track, the famous multi-day trek over the Owen Stanley Range, the dry months matter even more. Wet-season mud makes those trails slow and tough.

Beyond the capital

Our site only covers Port Moresby, but the country is big and the weather changes a lot from place to place. The Highlands, around Mount Hagen and Goroka, are cooler and have chilly nights. Many coastal and island areas, like Madang and the north coast, get their heaviest rain at different times than the capital does. If you're going beyond Moresby, check the local pattern for each stop.

Flights are a big part of the picture here. Many places have no road link, so you'll rely on small planes. Heavy rain and low cloud can cause delays, which is another reason to favour the drier months.

Events and crowds

Festivals are the real draw. The Mount Hagen Show in August and the Goroka Show in September bring tribes in full dress to sing and dance. These are called "sing-sings." Both fall in the best window for Port Moresby, so you can combine them with a capital stopover.

Independence Day on 16 September is a national holiday, and you'll see celebrations around the country. Expect busier flights and full guesthouses near festival dates.

High season runs through the dry months, roughly mid-year into early spring. Low season is the wet stretch around the new year through March. Prices and crowds ease off then, but travel is slower and trips inland can get cut short by weather. Want the smoothest trip? Aim for August or September.
