When to visit Nauru

One island, one climate

Nauru is tiny. You can drive around the whole island in under half an hour, so there's no regional split to worry about. Yaren, the de facto capital (there's no official one), gives you the picture for everywhere. The weather is the same whether you're at the airport, on the coast road or up on Command Ridge.

It's warm all year. June is the hottest month at 29°C, but the gap between seasons is small. You'll feel it more in the humidity than in the heat itself.

Wet months and dry months

February is the wettest month, with 181 mm. Rain tends to come in heavy bursts, and the roads can flood in low spots. That's a fair time to skip the WWII relics, like the old Japanese guns and bunkers, because the paths get muddy.

August and October to November are our picks. It's drier, and the sea is calmer for snorkelling or a swim at Anibare Bay. Fishing from the shore is easier too. The Buada Lagoon, ringed by banana and pandanus trees, is nicest on a dry day.

Holidays and crowds

Nauru has almost no tourist season. You won't see packed beaches or sold-out hotels. The real pressure is on flights. Services are limited, and seats can fill up around public holidays, when families travel.

Independence Day on 31 January is the big one, with sports, singing and dancing. Angam Day on 26 October celebrates the population recovering after the world wars, and it falls right in our best window. Expect government offices and shops to close on both days.

Travelling in October? You'll catch Angam Day plus the better weather. If you'd rather have quiet and don't mind rain, go in the wetter months. Either way, book your flight and a guesthouse early, because rooms are few and the island is small.
