When to visit Micronesia

Dry months and wet months

Micronesia sits close to the equator, so it's warm all year. The real question is rain. Palikir, the capital on Pohnpei island, is one of the wettest places on Earth, and it feels that way. Showers can arrive any afternoon, even in a good month.

Our data picks February and August as the best months for Palikir. February is a little drier and the sea is often calmer. August is a surprise, since it's still green and wet, but it suits some visitors for other reasons. May is the wettest month at 284 mm. Expect heavy downpours, muddy trails and grey skies.

Heat, wind and typhoons

November is the hottest month at 28°C. That's not extreme, though. Days feel sticky rather than scorching, and the trade winds help. Warm, steady weather makes it easy to plan boat trips and snorkelling.

Typhoon season runs roughly from July to November across the western Pacific. Pohnpei is south of the main typhoon belt, so it's hit less often than Guam or Yap. Still, storms can disrupt flights and sea travel. If you're heading to other states, such as Yap or Chuuk, check the forecast before you book boats.

Events, crowds and when to go

Micronesia is never packed. Tourism is small, and flights are limited, so the busy times are mostly about divers. Dry-season months, roughly December to April, are the most popular for diving at Chuuk Lagoon and for visiting the ruins of Nan Madol, the ancient stone city off Pohnpei's coast. Seas are calmer then, and the boat ride is easier.

Federated States of Micronesia Independence Day falls on 3 November, and Constitution Day is 10 May. Both bring closures and local celebrations. Government offices in Palikir shut, and some shops do too.

If you want the quietest trip, aim for the wetter months, and accept a few soggy afternoons. If you want easier travel and better visibility underwater, go in February. Either way, flights run only a few times a week, so build in a spare day at each end.
