Nassau: the one place we cover

Nassau is our only Bahamas destination, so this page is really about New Providence Island and Paradise Island next to it. The Out Islands, like the Exumas, Eleuthera and Abaco, follow a similar pattern. Ferries and small planes can be less frequent there, so plan around that.

January to March: the sweet spot

This is the best window for Nassau. Days are warm without being sticky, and the sea is pleasant for a swim, though not bathwater. Cable Beach and Junkanoo Beach are comfortable for a full afternoon. It's also high season, so expect fuller hotels and busy cruise-ship days along Bay Street. If you hate crowds, check which days the big ships are in port and head to Cable Beach or the quieter western end of the island.

Junkanoo is the big event. This street parade of music, costumes and cowbells runs on Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year's Day, with Bay Street as the main stage. Hotels fill up and prices rise, so those weeks are the busiest of the year. Spring break brings student crowds in March.

Summer: hot and wet

August is the hottest month at 30°C, and June is the wettest at 162 mm. Nobody else shares those titles in our data. Afternoons feel heavy, and showers often roll in fast, then pass. Mornings are the best time for snorkelling and for walking around Fort Fincastle.

Summer is low season, so you'll find cheaper rooms and shorter lines. Travelling with kids? School holidays still bring families, especially around Emancipation Day in early August, a public holiday with beach parties and events.

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk in late summer and early autumn. Most trips go fine, but a storm can cancel flights. Buy travel insurance that covers weather delays.

If you want a middle ground, try April, May or early December. You'll get good weather, thinner crowds and a calmer Nassau.
