Visiting Colombo in July
July: warm, damp days
Colombo stays warm in July, but the air feels sticky and the sky is often cloudy. Rain falls on many days, usually in short spells, so outdoor plans can get interrupted. June is wetter, while August brings a little more rain than July.
You can still visit the National Museum or explore the arcades and shops around Fort between showers. Galle Face Green is pleasant when the rain eases, but long beach days are a gamble. Skip plans that depend on clear skies, such as spending hours outdoors in Viharamahadevi Park.
July events and crowds
Esala Poya, a Buddhist full-moon holiday, falls in July or August depending on the year. Temples hold observances, and some shops may close for the holiday. The famous Esala Perahera takes place in Kandy, not Colombo, so don't expect its processions in the capital.
July is generally a quieter time for visitors than the drier months of January and February. You may find fewer tourists and lower hotel rates, though prices vary. Families who prefer dry days for beach time may find July frustrating; city breaks are easier to adapt around showers.
Make rainy spells easier
Keep Colombo's covered Dutch Hospital precinct in Fort in mind for a meal or a pause from the rain. It's close to several central sights, so you can adjust your plans without crossing the city. For a local meal, try a rice and curry lunch; the mix of dishes makes a good stop when a shower sets in.
Rain can slow traffic, especially on busy routes through Fort and Pettah. A short tuk-tuk ride may be simpler than walking between sights when the pavements are wet, but agree on the fare before you set off.
