Visiting Cartagena in August
August: hot and damp
August in Cartagena feels sticky from morning to night. Highs reach 30°C, and the humidity makes walks through Getsemaní or the Walled City tiring. Rain falls on most days, often in short, heavy bursts, while thick cloud and little sunshine can leave the streets feeling close.
You can still enjoy museums, churches and long lunches indoors. Keep beach time flexible: Bocagrande's shore can be pleasant between showers, but don't count on a full sunny day. A boat trip to the Rosario Islands is less appealing when skies look unsettled. July is a little drier; September is wetter, so August sits between them.
Holidays and crowds
August 7 is Colombia's Battle of Boyacá holiday. It can bring a long weekend and more Colombian visitors, though it isn't Cartagena's main festival season. The city's big Independence celebrations happen in November, not August.
Outside that holiday period, August is generally quieter and less costly than the busy, dry stretch from December to March. Families who want calmer streets may prefer August, but rain and heat can make a full day of sightseeing harder. You'll find fewer crowds than in high season, not guaranteed empty plazas.
Make plans around showers
Treat the rain as part of the day, not a reason to stay in. Visit Castillo San Felipe de Barajas when the sky is clearer; its open slopes offer little shelter from heavy showers or the midday heat. When rain starts, duck into the nearby Getsemaní cafés, then return to the old streets once it eases.
For a practical local move, use the covered arcades around Plaza de los Coches as a pause point. You can wait out a downpour there before walking to the Clock Tower or the Walled City's museums.
