November: heat returns

Cairns feels hot and sticky in November, with warm nights and plenty of sunshine between showers. Rain is more common than in October, but December is much wetter. You can still take a reef trip or explore the Esplanade Lagoon; keep rainforest walks, such as the Barron Gorge circuit, to cooler parts of the day.

November doesn't have one major annual festival that draws visitors to Cairns. It's a quieter month for events than the Cairns Festival period in August, so your visit is more about the reef, rainforest and local markets than a packed event calendar.

Crowds and prices are generally lower than in the popular dry-season months of August and September. You'll find fewer visitors than during the Christmas and school-holiday rush, though the heat and rising rain can make November less appealing for some. Ask your reef-trip operator about stinger suits before you board. Many trips provide them, and you'll want one for swimming around the reef during stinger season. On land, the Esplanade Lagoon gives you a safer swim close to the city, even when the sea is off-limits.
