August is one of Cairns' best months for being outdoors. Days feel warm and mostly sunny, while evenings are cooler and comfortable. Rain is limited, so you're less likely to lose a whole day to a downpour.

It's a good time for a reef trip from Cairns Marina, a walk along the Esplanade, or a visit to the Botanic Gardens. The dry weather also suits rainforest outings to Kuranda. Swimming is pleasant, but the sea can still feel cool when you first get in. August isn't the best pick if you want the hottest beach days; September is warmer.

Events and crowds

Cairns Festival usually runs in August, with arts, music and community events around the city. The programme and dates change each year, so check the festival's schedule for your travel dates.

August falls in Cairns' busy dry-season period. You'll share reef boats and Kuranda trips with more visitors than in the wet months, and accommodation can cost more. It's still a more comfortable time for sightseeing than the humid, rainy summer. Families who want reliable outdoor days may find the extra company worth it.

A local tip

For a rainforest day, pair the Kuranda Scenic Railway with Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Take the train up through the Barron Gorge and return by cable car over the forest canopy. The two routes give you very different views, and August's clearer skies can help from the lookout points.

On the cableway, get off at the Red Peak and Barron Falls stations. The boardwalks and falls viewing area add a proper rainforest walk, not just a ride above the trees. Check the falls on the day: dry-season water levels can be lower than after summer rain.
