Bern Weather in February

February feels cold and grey

Bern's winter days are chilly, often damp, and short on sunshine. Highs reach about 5°C, while nights can dip below freezing. Rain falls on 12 days, and the sky is often cloudy, so the old town's arcades are handy for sheltered wandering.

You can still enjoy the Zytglogge clock tower, the covered streets and cosy cafés. But wet paving and cold air make long riverside strolls less appealing. Save a Gurten walk for a clearer day; the hill can feel exposed in winter.

Carnival, if the dates fit

Bern Carnival, or Fasnacht, is held after Ash Wednesday, so it can fall in February or March. When it does, expect masked groups, music and lively parades in the old town. Check the dates before you go, as they shift each year.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the carnival days. February is generally quieter than summer, and accommodation can be less costly than in peak months. The trade-off is a smaller choice of outdoor activities when the weather turns wet.

Make the most of the arcades

Travelling with kids? The covered arcades make it easier to explore without being out in the rain all day. Duck into the Einstein House on Kramgasse, then warm up with a café stop nearby.

A useful local tip: follow the arcades between the Zytglogge and the Bear Park if the weather is poor. You can see much of the old town while staying sheltered, though the route down to the river is open to the elements. February has around three hours of sun a day, so keep outdoor plans flexible.
