When to go to Belgrade: a seasonal guide
Spring and early summer: easy walking weather
March is still cool, but it's dry enough for a first look at the Kalemegdan fortress, where the Sava and Danube rivers meet. April is the sweet spot. Highs reach 19°C, the trees are in leaf, and café terraces on Skadarlija, the old cobbled artists' street, start filling up.
May and June are warm and green, but they're also the wettest months. May has rain on 14 days. Most of it comes as short showers, so you can duck into a café or the Nikola Tesla Museum and head out again. If you only have a few days, these months suit city breaks well.
July and August: hot, and the river takes over
Both months reach 31°C, with long, sunny days. Afternoons in the centre can feel heavy, so do your sightseeing in the morning and spend the late hours by the water. The splavovi, floating bars and clubs along the Sava and Danube, are the heart of summer nights. Ada Ciganlija, a river island with a long pebble beach, is where locals go to swim.
Music fans have Exit, the big festival held in nearby Novi Sad, usually in July. It's a short trip by train or bus. Belgrade itself is busiest with visitors in summer, though it never feels packed like a coastal resort. Many locals leave for the sea in August, so some smaller restaurants may close for a week or two.
September to October: our pick for most trips
September is warm, at 26°C, with only a little rain. It's good for a mix of sightseeing and riverside evenings. Early autumn also brings Belgrade Beer Fest, usually in late summer, and the Belgrade Book Fair arrives in October. Check dates before you book, as they shift.
October cools to 20°C by day and 8°C at night. Crowds are smaller, and the fortress park looks lovely in autumn colour. It's a good time for a food-focused trip: try grilled meat, kajmak (a creamy dairy spread) and warm burek (flaky cheese pastry) in the old town.
Winter: cold, grey and cheap
From December to February, it's cold and damp. January sees highs of 5°C and only about two hours of sun a day. Low season means quieter museums and lower hotel rates. If you like cosy evenings in a kafana, a traditional tavern with live music, it can be a good fit. If you want to walk around outdoors, pick another season.
