When to go to Pest: a seasonal guide
Spring and early summer: April to June
April is one of our two best months, and you can feel why. Days are mild, around 18°C, and the chestnut trees along Andrássy Avenue come into leaf. It's easy walking weather from the Great Market Hall to Heroes' Square. Expect a few showers, but most days stay dry.
May and June are warmer and greener, though they're the wettest stretch of the year. Rain falls on 12 or 13 days a month, usually as short storms. Cafés in Erzsébetváros (the 7th district) put tables out, and the ruin bars, old buildings turned into courtyard pubs, are at their best. Spring Festival, usually running from late March into April, fills the concert halls. Easter brings market stalls and a busier feel.
Summer: July and August
It's hot, with highs near 30°C and the most sun of the year. July and August tie for the warmest nights at 17°C. Afternoons on the pavements of Pest can feel heavy. Do what locals do: spend the hottest hours in a thermal bath like Széchenyi or Gellért, then come out again after dinner when the Danube bank cools off.
This is high season, with the most visitors and school holidays across Europe. Sziget Festival, a huge music event on Óbuda Island, usually takes over in August and pulls in young crowds. St Stephen's Day on 20 August ends with fireworks over the river. Hate crowds? Pick another month.
Autumn: September and October
September is our other top pick. Highs are around 24°C, the heat has gone, and you still get long, bright days. It's ideal for a river walk, a climb up Gellért Hill, or a long lunch of goulash or lángos (fried dough with sour cream and cheese). Grape harvest events and wine festivals pop up, and Hungarian wine is worth the detour.
October cools to 17°C and gets greyer. It's still pleasant and quieter, with fewer queues at Parliament and the Buda Castle area. By November, it's damp and dim, with under three hours of sun a day.
Winter: December to February
Winter is cold and gloomy. Highs sit just above freezing, nights drop below it, and humidity makes it feel raw. January is the coldest month. But it's the cheap, quiet season, and steaming outdoor thermal pools feel best now. In December, the Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square brings mulled wine and chimney cake (kürtőskalács). If you want museums, baths and few crowds, winter works well.
