Budapest and Pest: much the same, with small differences

Our data lists Budapest and Pest separately, but they're two halves of the same city on either side of the Danube. Expect similar weather. Pest runs a touch warmer in July, at 30°C against 29°C. Budapest gets its wettest month in May and Pest in June, so showers can turn up in either late spring month.

September is the pick for both. April also works well for Pest and its walkable streets, from the Great Market Hall to Andrássy Avenue.

Spring, summer, autumn and winter

Spring is fresh and changeable. Gardens and Margaret Island turn green, and you'll want a rain jacket on some days. Summer is hot, with July the warmest month in both places. Afternoons feel heavy on the Buda hills and along the boulevards, so do your sightseeing in the morning and spend the late afternoon in a thermal bath. Széchenyi and Gellért are two well-known ones.

Autumn is the sweet spot. Days are comfortable, the light is soft, and wine season brings harvest festivals. Winter is cold and grey, but it's cosy. Christmas markets fill Vörösmarty Square, and a steaming outdoor bath on a freezing day is hard to beat.

Holidays, events and crowds

High season runs from late spring to early autumn, with the biggest crowds in summer. Hotels fill up during the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, held at the Hungaroring outside the city, usually in summer. Sziget Festival, a huge week-long music event on an island in the Danube, also packs the city in August.

National days matter too. March 15 marks the 1848 revolution, August 20 is St Stephen's Day with fireworks over the river, and October 23 remembers the 1956 uprising. Expect closed shops and busy bridges on those dates.

Low season is winter, apart from the Christmas markets. If you want quieter museums and lower prices, go in January or February, and bring a warm coat.
