April: warm and changeable

April feels like a step down from March's heat, but afternoons can still feel sticky. Days reach about 29°C, with mild evenings around 18°C. Rain falls on several days, so a sudden shower can interrupt a walk through the historic centre. You'll still get sunny spells for seeing the Palacio de los López or browsing the Mercado 4, but leave long outdoor plans flexible.

The humidity and rain make strenuous walks less pleasant, especially around the exposed Costanera. Choose a shaded café or a museum when showers roll in, and save a stroll along the waterfront for a dry spell. May is cooler, so April isn't the easiest month for heat-sensitive visitors.

Holy Week and quieter streets

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, sometimes falls in April. It brings religious services and can change opening hours, while many residents travel to visit family. Check local arrangements before counting on shops or restaurants being open over the holiday.

Outside that travel period, April is usually quieter than Asunción's peak months from June to September. You'll find fewer visitors at sights such as the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes, and prices are generally less pressured than in the cooler high season. Budget travellers may find April a comfortable middle ground, though Easter travel can make some routes busier.

A practical April tip

For a rainy afternoon, head to the Museo del Barro in the Villa Morra area. It's a welcome indoor break, with Indigenous, folk and contemporary Paraguayan art under one roof. You can pair it with a meal nearby rather than getting caught in a downpour on the Costanera.

Try chipa, a baked cheese-and-starch bread sold around the city, as a quick snack between stops. It's especially handy when a shower delays your plans and you want something local without sitting down for a full meal.
