Visiting Astana in February
February feels severe
Astana's February weather is properly cold, with highs around -10°C and lows near -19°C. The air can feel damp, and you'll get only a little sun during short days. February has 20 mm of rain across six days, though winter conditions can make getting around feel harder than that figure suggests.
Keep sightseeing close to warm indoor stops. The National Museum is a good place to spend a few hours, while Khan Shatyr has shops and places to eat under its huge tent roof. Baiterek is worth seeing, but an exposed visit to the tower may not be comfortable for long. Save long walks along the Ishim River for milder weather.
Events and crowds
There isn't a major fixed national festival in Astana in February. Valentine's Day is marked by some restaurants and shops, but it isn't a citywide cultural event. For a stronger sense of local celebrations, Nauryz comes in March.
February is winter low season, well away from the May-to-September period that's best for visiting. You're likely to find fewer leisure visitors than in summer, and accommodation can be cheaper, though prices vary. Travelling with kids? Indoor stops will make the day easier, but the cold can make time outside tiring.
Make the cold work for you
Treat the city as a series of short outings, rather than planning a full day on foot. A taxi between Baiterek and Khan Shatyr can spare you a long, exposed walk. For a warm meal, try beshbarmak, a traditional dish of meat and noodles, at a local restaurant.
The weather is a poor fit for outdoor sightseeing, so don't plan February around parks or riverside strolls. If you're set on wide-open views, keep the visit to Baiterek brief and spend the rest of the day indoors.
