Visiting Amritsar in May
Heat shapes the day
May is punishingly hot in Amritsar. Afternoons can reach 42°C, and even nights stay warm, with lows of 26°C. The air is fairly dry, but that doesn't make long walks in the sun comfortable. Rain is limited, so you're unlikely to get much relief from a shower.
Keep outdoor sightseeing around the Golden Temple to cooler hours, then spend the hottest part of the day indoors. The Partition Museum and the air-conditioned galleries at Gobindgarh Fort suit a slow afternoon. Skip long walks around Jallianwala Bagh in midday heat; the open paths offer little shade.
Festivals and crowds
Vaisakhi, Amritsar's best-known spring festival, falls in April, so its biggest crowds have usually passed by May. Guru Arjan Dev's martyrdom observance follows the Sikh calendar and can fall in late May or June; its date varies. There isn't a major citywide festival reliably held every May.
Summer school holidays can bring Indian families to the Golden Temple, but May is generally quieter than the cooler November-to-February peak. Hotels and flights may cost less than in those popular months, though holiday weekends can still be busy. Families with young children may find the heat tiring, especially during outdoor sightseeing.
A cooler Golden Temple visit
For a calmer visit, go to the Golden Temple after sunset. The marble walkway around the sacred pool feels cooler, and the illuminated shrine makes a striking evening stop. You can also eat langar, the free community meal served at the temple, rather than searching for a restaurant in the midday heat.
May is a poor fit for anyone hoping to spend long days outdoors. Keep a visit to Jallianwala Bagh brief, and save the walk through Hall Bazaar for evening. If you're coming mainly for cooler weather, Srinagar has a much more comfortable May climate.
