December: cool, often damp

December feels chilly rather than bitter, with mild afternoons and cold evenings. Rain falls on about ten days, and cloudy spells can make the old stone streets feel colder. The Citadel and covered lanes of the Old City still suit a sightseeing day, but leave time for indoor stops when showers set in.

December has less daylight than the warmer months, so you'll have a shorter window for outdoor visits. The Citadel's steps can be slick after rain; take your time on the climb. A café stop for Aleppine coffee can be a welcome pause.

Christmas and quieter streets

Some Christian churches in Aleppo hold Christmas services on December 25, and New Year brings local gatherings. These are community occasions, not citywide festivals, so don't expect a packed events calendar.

If you hate crowds, December is usually calmer than the popular spring and autumn months. You may find fewer visitors at major sights and softer hotel prices than in peak season, though local conditions can affect what's open and available.

Make room for rain

December's wet weather can interrupt long walks, and the chill makes outdoor evenings less appealing. Save a flexible day for the Aleppo National Museum or a leisurely meal if rain reaches the Old City. Kibbeh Aleppiyeh, a local bulgur-and-meat dish, is a good reason to linger indoors.

Travelling with kids? Keep the Citadel visit for a dry spell, when the stone paths are easier to manage. The covered souqs offer shelter, but some sections may be closed or quiet; check locally before setting out. Don't count on every historic site having regular hours in winter.
