Zhengzhou Weather in January

Cold, mostly dry days

January in Zhengzhou feels properly wintry. Days reach about 6°C, while nights can fall to -4°C. Rain is scarce, but cold air and short daylight hours can make long outdoor days tiring.

The dry weather suits indoor stops such as Henan Museum, where you can take your time among its ancient bronzes. You can also see Erqi Memorial Tower in the city centre, but keep outdoor sightseeing brief when the cold sets in. Shaolin Temple is a longer outing; its open courtyards can feel especially chilly.

January holidays

New Year's Day is a public holiday in China. If Lunar New Year falls in January, travel can pick up around the holiday, and some businesses may close. Its date changes each year, so don't assume January will be quiet throughout.

Quieter than spring

January is generally a low-season time to visit, compared with March and April or October, Zhengzhou's best months overall. You'll usually find fewer visitors at major sights, and accommodation may cost less than during those popular periods. The Lunar New Year travel rush is the main exception.

For a local winter meal, try Zhengzhou huimian, a thick, hand-pulled noodle soup. It's a good way to warm up after a walk around Erqi Square. Check Henan Museum's opening arrangements before making it the centre of your day, especially around public holidays.
