West Island Weather in April

April: wet and sticky

April feels warm all day, with little change between daytime and night. Rain falls often, and the high humidity can make a short walk around West Island feel tiring. Cloud and limited sunshine can interrupt beach time, so don't count on long, bright afternoons.

You can still explore the island by bike or visit the Cocos Islands Visitor Centre between showers. For snorkelling or a boat trip, keep your plans flexible; rainy weather can make time on the water less appealing. April isn't the best month for a sun-focused beach break.

Events and island days

Easter sometimes falls in April. If it does, Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and some services may pause. The date changes each year, so don't assume Easter is always in April.

Travelling with kids? A ferry ride to Home Island can make a good change of scene, but check the local timetable before setting out. The ferry links the two islands, and wet weather may make waiting at the jetty less comfortable.

Quieter than peak season

April is outside the best months of August to October, so you're likely to find fewer visitors than in that popular period. Prices aren't guaranteed to be lower, though; flights and places to stay can be limited on a remote island.

A practical tip: ask about the ferry from West Island to Home Island before planning a meal at the Rumah Baru café. Home Island has a Cocos Malay community, and the ferry is the key link between the islands. Rain on many April days makes it especially useful to know your return options.
