Visiting Varanasi in November
Mild days, cool mornings
November is one of Varanasi's most comfortable months. Afternoons reach about 29°C, while mornings and evenings feel cooler, near 15°C. The air is fairly dry, with little rain and plenty of sunshine.
That suits long walks through the old lanes, visits to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and boat rides on the Ganges. The steps and stone paths around the ghats can still feel warm in the afternoon, so save your longest walk for later in the day. You won't need to plan around frequent showers, but evenings on the river can feel chilly.
For families with young children, the gentler weather makes exploring the ghats easier than in the hotter months.
Festival crowds
Dev Deepawali falls on Kartik Purnima, a date that shifts each year and can land in November. The ghats fill with rows of oil lamps, and the riverfront gets exceptionally crowded. Chhath Puja may also fall in November; families gather by the Ganges at sunrise and sunset to make offerings.
November begins Varanasi's popular cool-season stretch, which runs through February. Expect more visitors and stronger demand for rooms than during the rainy season or hottest months. Festival nights are especially busy, so the usual quiet by the river may be hard to find.
A calmer ghat visit
If you want to see the Ganges without joining the biggest crowds, visit Assi Ghat for Subah-e-Banaras, its morning programme of music and prayer. It's a more peaceful way to start the day than heading straight to Dashashwamedh Ghat, which draws large crowds for the evening Ganga Aarti.
For Dev Deepawali, don't expect an easy stroll along the riverfront. Pick a ghat away from the main crush, and allow extra time to reach it on foot. The lamps and river are lovely, but the packed lanes can make getting around slow.
