Visiting Tunis in July
July: hot, bright days
Tunis in July feels properly hot. Afternoons can be sticky, with highs around 35°C, little cloud and almost no rain. Evenings are much easier, but the sun stays strong through the day.
The Medina's narrow lanes offer some shade, so browse its souks in the morning and save indoor sights for the hottest hours. The Bardo National Museum is a good afternoon stop. Avoid long walks across exposed ruins at Carthage in midday heat; go later, when the light softens.
Festivals and holiday crowds
The Carthage International Festival often runs in July and August, with concerts and performances at the Roman amphitheatre. Its programme changes each year. On July 25, Republic Day brings official events, and some shops or services may close.
If you hate crowds, choose spring or autumn instead. July is high season, and coastal resorts draw holidaymakers, so accommodation and flights can cost more than in April, May, October or November. Tunis can feel less crowded than the beach towns, but popular sights and festival nights still get busy.
Make the heat work for you
Plan a slower day: explore the Medina early, rest indoors in the afternoon, then head out again after the heat eases. Sidi Bou Said is a pleasant evening trip for its blue-and-white streets and views over the Gulf of Tunis.
Travelling with kids? Keep exposed sites like Carthage brief, and use the cooler evening for a walk instead.
For the Carthage festival, take the TGM light rail from Tunis Marine towards Carthage, then walk to the amphitheatre. Check the return service after late performances, as getting back can take longer than the show itself.
