When to go to Tirunelveli: a seasonal guide
January to February: the sweet spot
January is the best month here. Days reach about 30°C, nights are cooler, and the rain mostly stops. February is just as easy, and it's drier still. Mornings are good for walking the Tamirabarani River ghats (the stone steps down to the water) and for wandering the streets around the Nellaiappar Temple. Afternoons get warm but not punishing.
This is also the best time for a day trip. The Courtallam waterfalls, about 55 km away, are often at their best after the late monsoon, and the town is a popular stop for Tamil families. Pongal, the harvest festival in mid-January, brings a lively mood. Expect sweet rice dishes, decorated cattle in nearby villages and busy bus stations. Book your onward trains early if you travel around then.
March to May: hot, then stormy
March is the hottest month, with highs of 36°C and little shade on temple courtyards. The stone floors get hot underfoot, so go barefoot only early in the day or bring socks. By April the storms start, and May is wet and sticky with grey skies.
Still, the Nellaiappar Temple's big Aani Thirukalyanam festival falls in June or July, and the temple chariot (a huge wooden cart) draws large crowds. If you want to see local devotion at its liveliest, that's your window. It's not for you if you dislike heat and crowds.
June to September: grey and humid
The southwest monsoon is weaker here than on the Kerala coast, but the sky stays cloudy and it rains on most days. The sun barely shows in July. You'll get short, steady showers rather than all-day downpours. August is a little easier than the months around it.
This is the quiet stretch for visitors. Hotels are rarely full, and you'll have the temples fairly to yourself. It suits you if you'd rather have space than sunshine. Pack a proper umbrella for the walk to the Junction bus stand.
October to December: the wet one
October and November are the wettest months, with rain on 20 days each. November is the worst, and roads can flood. The northeast monsoon is the main rainy season for this part of Tamil Nadu, so don't assume the south is dry in winter. Skip these months unless you have to be here.
December starts to clear, but humidity stays high. Plan trips for late December onward, when the skies open up and the town feels easy again.
