December to February: the best stretch
This is the time to come. December and January score best, and February isn't far behind. Days are warm but not harsh, and nights are mild enough for a comfortable walk. December is still a bit damp, with some showers and sticky air, so January is the safest pick.
It suits temple-hopping well. You can climb the Rockfort in the morning, then cross the Cauvery to Srirangam. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is huge, with a lot of open stone ground to cover, and cooler weather makes that far easier. Vaikunta Ekadasi, usually in December or January, draws big crowds to Srirangam. It's a memorable day if you like atmosphere, but not one for a quiet visit. Pongal, the harvest festival, falls in mid-January. Expect decorated streets, sweet rice and closed shops for a day or two.
This is also high season, so rooms near Srirangam fill up faster around the festivals.
March to September: hot, then patchy
From March, it gets properly hot. April is the hottest month at 38°C, and March and May are close behind. Afternoons around the Rockfort steps are tough, with hot stone underfoot. If you must come, do your sightseeing early and rest through the middle of the day. Chithirai festivities in Srirangam fall in April or May, and they're lively, but you'll pay for them in heat.
June to September is cloudier, with the southwest monsoon bringing showers rather than a full soaking. Trichy sits on the dry side of that monsoon, so it's less wet than the Kerala coast. You'll still get rain on many days in August and September, but it's usually manageable. Prices and crowds are low, so it works if you hate queues and can live with grey skies.
October and November: the rain
These are the wettest months. November is the wettest of all, with 189 mm, and October isn't far behind. Rain falls on most days, humidity is high, and the sun barely shows. This is the northeast monsoon, which is what feeds Tamil Nadu's rivers. Roads can flood, and trains and buses can run late.
If you're travelling with kids or have a tight itinerary, skip it. If you're flexible and want empty temples and green riverbanks, it can work. Just keep your days short and plan for indoor stops like the Srirangam temple halls.
