May feels like spring turning toward summer in Tianjin. Afternoons can reach 29°C, while evenings cool to around 13°C. Rain is limited, so you'll usually have plenty of time for outdoor plans. The long, sunny days suit walks through the leafy streets of the Five Great Avenues and along the Haihe River.

It can feel warm in the middle of the day, especially on open stretches with little shade. Save indoor stops, such as the Tianjin Museum, for a hot afternoon. June is hotter and wetter, so May is a good choice for sightseeing before summer sets in.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in May and brings a busy travel period. Tianjin's popular sights, including Ancient Culture Street, can get crowded, and hotel prices may rise around the holiday. Outside that peak, May is part of the spring shoulder season, with milder weather than summer and generally fewer visitors than during the holiday rush.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling over Labour Day and visit the old streets on a weekday. May 4 is Youth Day, but it isn't a nationwide public holiday.

A local tip

For a taste of Tianjin, try jianbing guozi, a savoury pancake with egg and crunchy fried dough. It's a local breakfast favourite, and you'll find stalls around the city. Eat it fresh rather than saving it for later; the crisp filling softens quickly.

Travelling with kids? The Haihe River is an easy change of pace after a busy visit to the city's historic streets. A riverside stroll lets you see Tianjin's bridges and skyline without committing to another long museum stop.
