Visiting Praia in March
March weather in Praia
March feels warm and mostly dry in Praia, with daytime highs around 23°C and evenings still mild. Rain is scarce, so you can comfortably wander the Plateau's colonial streets, browse the market at Sucupira, or take a day trip to Cidade Velha. There's plenty of sunshine for outdoor plans, though the coast can feel breezy.
Beach time works well at Quebra Canela, Praia's city beach. For a longer swim and a quieter stretch of sand, head to nearby Prainha. You're unlikely to lose much sightseeing time to rain, but don't expect lush, green scenery; the dry season leaves Santiago looking dusty.
Events and local life
Carnival can fall in March, depending on the year. Praia's parades bring music and dancing to the streets, but the timing changes, so March isn't a guaranteed carnival month. There's no major fixed national holiday in March.
If you're in town during carnival, expect lively streets and some disruption around parade routes. Otherwise, everyday life carries on at a relaxed pace. Try cachupa, a slow-cooked stew of corn, beans and vegetables, at a local restaurant in the Plateau.
Crowds and practical tips
March sits within Praia's popular December-to-April dry season. It's generally a better bet for reliable outdoor days than the wetter months, so you may find more visitors than in the low season. Prices can also be firmer than during quieter, rainier months, though Praia isn't usually as busy as beach resorts elsewhere in Cabo Verde.
If you hate crowds, visit Cidade Velha on a weekday. To get there, ask for an aluguer, a shared minibus, from Praia; confirm it's heading to Cidade Velha before you board. The old town's stone lanes and Fortaleza Real de São Filipe are easier to enjoy at an unhurried pace.
